microGraphs Overview

microGraphs is an API from MakeLogic. It works on J2ME platform. To be more specific it is built over the MIDP API for the wireless devices or handhelds.

What you get by using this API ?

This API is useful for those developers who are looking for presenting their data in a graphical form on devices like mobile phones, palm tops and other hand helds. Data can be sent over the internet to any wireless device and can be rendered there in the form of LineGraph or BarGraph. The current API is designed keeping performance as the key parameter in mind. It provides the developer with various mutator functions (setXXXX functions) to customize the graphs completely. Here are a few sample renderings

Architecture

MIDP API does not support floating point operations. All the calculations needed for the graph to render are done at the MakeLogic Servers. As a user, the developer is not bothered of all these processes at all. The developer will only have to instantiate the graph and show it on the screen. While instantiating, the microGraphs will contact the MakeLogic servers for all the floating point calculations and get the results and render them on the end users device.

EvalEngine

EvalEngine is the Server Side part of the microGraphs API. The microGraphs will contact the EvalEngine for all its floating point calculations for rendering the graph in any device. EvalEngine runs as a Java Servlet at the MakeLogic servers. However, those companies that are interested in running the EvalEngine on their own servers may negotiate with MakeLogic. In such cases only the applications which use the microGraphs API distributed by a company (which has the EvalEngine) can route the traffic to their servers.

Current Version

The current version of MIDP supports the LineGraphs and BarGraphs.

Future Versions

The next version will be released in about 3 weeks from now ie May 10, 2002

We offer a free update to the immediate next version of this product. The next version will contain the following additional features

• PieGraph

• Streaming Line and Bar Graphs : This will have a line or bar graph scrolling to the left or top with the new data updating the graph in real time. Ex : This can show the current stock price of any company.

• Compare the values of two companies on a single graph

• Select a particular line or bar and get the values displayed in small text areas at the bottom.
