5th IT-BHU Hyderabad Chapter Alumni Association Meeting

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Hey this is fun!

IT-BHU is the place where I did my B.Tech (engineering). Old students are meeting at Hyderabad this evening, 27th October 2007, at Family World, Begumpet, Hyderabad. Mostly the ex-students who are in and around Hyderabad may attend this meeting.

I have some really fond memories of my college. Ragging is one thing that always strikes to my mind. Ragging is the best thing that can happen to you IF done right. I am not endorsing ragging that leads to physical bruises and pain. Ragging should make one feel ‘at home’. It tears down the walls of ‘formal’, tie-and-suit type of conversation. It gives you the freedom of speech and action, that otherwise may not be possible. It gives you the ease of uttering the so called bad language. And let me tell you IITs and IT-BHU are all about that. In hindi slang, you can give some one the most imaginative ‘gali’ and yet get away with it. We literally had a ‘gali’ competition. We were divided into two teams and made to say the most creative/imaginative/out-of-the-world ‘galies’. It can get unbelievable. ‘Hearing is believing’ sometimes :)

Animesh called me to tell me about the meeting. First thing I asked him was, “How is ragging these days?”. I could hear an instant giggle on the phone. Seems like he too enjoyed it. But he told me that ragging toned down a lot. Some students were given the job of spying ;) to reduce ragging. I feel they are already missing some fun atleast.

Here are the pictures of my college building. We had our classes in the ground floor. First floor was reserved laboratories and engineering drawing rooms.

One day after our dinner in the hostel (C.V. Raman Hostel), we were going around the girls hostel (GH), behind our hostel. Luckily there was a temple just beside the GH. It was already 10:30pm then. And police caught us. One of my friends told them that we were going to temple. And police man said, “Ab mandir jaoge tho Bhagwan rolega yaar. Chalo tum log idhar se “. And he chased us away.

Trend Spotting

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

I wrote a little code today, which tries to capture the ‘Search Trends’ on Technorati and Google.

Here is the page

I will not get in to the details of analysis now.

If anyone has any interesting conclusions based on these trends please do let me know.

Mind games and implications

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

New age computer video games are in the offing.

NeuroSky

NeuroSky has developed a cost effective bio sensor and signal processing system for the consumer market.” This means that the bio signals from a human brain can be decoded to do some tasks. Playing video games is one simple and safe example to bring this technology to market.

Neurons of brain work on electric impulses. NeuroSky has developed a computer that can detect these signals. And convert them into actions or ‘events’ that can move things on the screen. This replaces the physical “Key Press” or “Mouse Move” action. Just thinking alone can make things happen now. Similar to a version of the computer used by Stephen Hawking.

Here are two things to talk about:

  • What are the long term implications of this technology?
  • Will this have a market potential for video games?

Long term implications can be serious. This may open up a pandoras box.

I have no clue if this is possible but, if at all this can be coupled with the wireless technology of today, then just a thought can make things physically happen. Imagine yourself sitting infront of a television and thinking it to shut down. That is a simple example of wireless and neural sensor system at work.

Can there be weapons like guns or of other form that can be triggered by a remote neural signal? Now that is really dangerous.

Coming to the second aspect ie market for the video games. US and Japan can be potential markets. NeuroSky can join hands with Sony, Wii Nintendo Or Microsoft at the earliest. They are already into the consumer market bigtime. I feel there can be a market potential if the costs are low.

Do technical interns learn?

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Three young interns have joined our company for a period of 6 weeks. They joined 3 days ago. Following are my initial observations on these three guys. Will try to write more on these guys as we go ahead into the program.

Now the question : Do technical interns learn?

Answer: Yes. But need experience.

I can see a spark in their face when I tell them a new thing. I notice that ’ideas’ impress them a lot. It is not the case with my colleagues. I tell my colleagues an idea, they immediately think of whether it is possible to ‘implement’ it with success.

With my colleagues it is not the ’idea’ that kicks off a discussion, but the ‘implementation of the idea’. That is engineering. ‘Implementation’ is everything in the real world business. ‘Idea’ is good, but out of 100 people who have the same idea only 10 may implement it and only 1 may implement it successfully.

Ideas are powerful. Micheal Faraday found out that a magnetic needle difflects when placed in the center of an electic current passing coil. It was the idea. Today, we see the motors work on the same principle. That is the implementation.

Interns learn ‘ideas’ from the ’implementers’. They have no clue of implementing it.

I did my internship at CWPRS (Central Water And Power Research Station) pune, India. It is the place where the biggest dams, ports and harbours and other hydraulic structures are designed. I have seen how the real world stuff is designed, but then I had no clue of implementing it.

Experience teaches the implementation. That completes an engineer.

Point I am trying to make is : Interns learn the ideas and need experience to do the real world stuff.
